What Are Dental Fillings?

Cavities happen when bacteria eat away tooth enamel. Dental fillings due to cavities are one of the most common dental problems treated at Cape Cod Dental. Dr. Fadi Zaknoun uses a variety of materials, such as amalgam, cast gold, composite, porcelain, and glass ionomer, to fill and protect cavities. For more information on how fillings can help protect the integrity of your mouth, contact our Wareham, MA office to schedule a dental exam today.

What Happens During A Dental Filling?

Having a cavity filled at Cape Cod Dental is a relatively easy process. While we offer a variety of fillings, the process is generally the same. The area surrounding your cavity will be numbed with a local anesthetic to help you feel more comfortable. Stronger sedation methods may be discussed if you have any fears or dental anxieties. Once you're numb, the decayed enamel is treated using a special drill that Dr. Zaknoun will select based on the location of your cavity and the amount of decay. After the enamel is cleared away and the area is disinfected, the area will be filled with the chosen filling material and set. Then, we will polish the filling material so it is smooth. You should be able to go about your day once the filling is done, but you may have a sensitivity to cold and hot foods and beverages for several days.

I came in for a filling and it was by far the best experience I have ever had at a dentist. Dr. Zaknoun explained everything he was doing which put me at ease.

Excellent overall. Dr. Zaknoun and his assistant, Tara, made me comfortable removing my cavity and then filling the tooth.

About Us
Are dental fillings covered by insurance?

Tooth-colored fillings are a standard treatment for dental cavities that are typically covered partially by dental insurance. A member of our team will contact your dental insurance company to understand your coverage so we can calculate your out-of-pocket costs. If you don't have dental insurance, Dr. Zaknoun will talk about the payments accepted by our office during your appointment, plus information on medical financing.

How long do dental fillings last?

Typically, our fillings can last anywhere from 7 – 20 years depending on the size of the fillings, the location of the tooth, and the patient's commitment to their oral health. However, even under the best circumstances, dental fillings experience daily wear and tear. Reach out to our staff for a consultation if you think you may need a replacement filling.

Are dental fillings painful?

No. Thanks to the use of our numbing agents, our patients report feeling little to no pain during their dental filling treatment. Therefore, patients can sit back and relax before returning to their normal day after their appointment.
